Criterion: Quran Reader

Privacy Policy

Effective date: 15 September 2026. Applies to the Criterion: Quran Reader application for Android (package name com.criterion.quran) and to the website at criterionapps.com.

This Privacy Policy describes how Criterion Apps ("we", "us" or "our") collects, uses and discloses information in connection with the Criterion: Quran Reader mobile application (the "App") and the website located at criterionapps.com (the "Website"), together the "Services". Criterion Apps is the trading name of an independent developer established in England and Wales and is the controller of the information described in this Privacy Policy. A postal contact address is available on request through the contact details in Section 14.

1. Information We Collect

The App does not require the creation of an account and does not request your name, email address, contact list, precise location, or access to the device camera or microphone. We collect only the limited categories of information described below.

2. Information Stored on Your Device

The App stores your preferences, reading position, saved and recent locations, memorisation progress and any downloaded audio content locally on your device. This information is not transmitted to us. It is removed when the App is uninstalled. The operating system may include application data in device backups in accordance with your device settings, which are outside our control.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information described above solely for the following purposes: to operate, maintain and improve the Services; to identify and correct defects; to deliver content you have requested; and to send communications you have expressly requested. We do not use the Services to serve advertising, and we do not engage in behavioural profiling or usage analytics.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

Where applicable data protection law requires a legal basis, we process diagnostic and network information on the basis of our legitimate interests in maintaining the security, stability and functionality of the Services, and we process email addresses submitted on the Website on the basis of your consent, which you may withdraw at any time.

5. Disclosure of Information

We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We may disclose information to the following categories of recipients:

Content you elect to share from the App is transmitted directly to the application you select through the operating system's sharing facility and is not transmitted to us.

6. Data Retention

Diagnostic information is retained by our crash reporting provider for a limited period determined by that provider, currently 90 days, after which it is deleted. Website access data is retained in server logs for a short period determined by our hosting provider. Email addresses submitted on the Website are retained until the requested communication has been sent or until you request deletion, whichever is earlier. Information stored locally on your device is retained for as long as the App remains installed.

7. International Transfers

Our service providers may process information in jurisdictions other than the one in which you reside. Where such transfers are subject to data protection law, we rely on the safeguards implemented by those providers, including adequacy regulations, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, or equivalent safeguards recognised under applicable law.

8. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure or destruction. Information transmitted from the App is encrypted in transit. No method of transmission or storage is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children

The Services are intended for a general audience and are not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove it.

10. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you, to restrict or object to its processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. We will honour such requests to the extent that we are able to identify the information as relating to you; diagnostic information is associated only with a randomly generated installation identifier and cannot ordinarily be linked to an individual. Requests may be submitted to the contact address below. You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority; in the United Kingdom this is the Information Commissioner's Office.

11. Third-Party Services

The Services may link to or rely upon third-party websites and services, including application distribution platforms and content hosts. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties, and we encourage you to review their respective privacy policies.

12. Cookies

The Website does not set cookies and does not use analytics or tracking scripts.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted at this address with a revised effective date. Where a change materially affects how we process your information, we will take reasonable steps to bring it to your attention, including through the release notes of the App.
